Asteroid 🌑
An asteroid is due to skim past the earth on Nov 2nd, although the chances of it hitting the earth are 0.41% and even so it is only about 2m in diameter, it has gone a bit viral… a mix of emotions on the internet, from noting that is the day before the US Election and could be a ‘good thing’ and also that we ‘deserve it’.
However, last week, an SUV sized asteroid set a record, flying just 2,950km over the southern Indian Ocean, the closest NEA (Near-Earth Asteroid) ever recorded - NASA.
Tinder Plus Pricing 💑
The popular dating app, Tinder, seems to quote users different prices discriminating by their age, gender and location… In Australia, after conducting a mystery shopper survey, the consumer organisation Choice has filed an official complaint to the national commission in the state, following a massive spread of figures from $6.99/month to $34/month. - Mashable.
Last year the company settled a $23M pricing discrimination suit in California…
Interesting.
Distorted Society Perceptions
I came across an interesting piece, in the Irish Times, on people’s perception vs the reality of the world around them.
“Despite the continued influence and importance of trusted media brands, there is this sinking feeling that accuracy and balance are becoming luxuries in this ultra-competitive, on-demand media environment. The emerging fact-checking industry is an ominous sign.
One way to diagnose the seriousness of the problem is to look for symptoms in the form of gaps between public perceptions and reality, which is why Ipsos MRBI, in association with The Irish Times, is publishing the latest Perils of Perception study.”

Blue = Survey Participants, Yellow = Reality/‘Official Figures’
“We see this in the public’s overestimation of immigration, social media usage, urbanisation or the proportion of young people still living at home with their parents. Probably this perception reality-gap is driven by a combination of social change being especially newsworthy or interesting, and our primitive programming that sensitises us to any changes in our environment.”

There are many more graphs like this in the piece, so go take a look, but it is important to note that the sample size surveyed was quite small at 708 people. And the supposedly official data could definitely also be out by a bit.
Worth a quick read

Because of pregnant women, the average number of skeletons in a human body is slightly higher than one.
That’s all 🤙🏽
