Morning ☕
I hope the Bank Holiday is treating you well! I’m very fortunate to be writing this from Spain - here on a short work project.
Travelling just feeds the soul, especially if you’re a creative in any form, I can’t explain how good but also strange it feels given the last year, but even more so I cannot wait for the summer ahead and hopefully the opening up of holiday travel ✈
Anyway, C’mere to me…
Interesting
Ransom Demands 💰
Threatening to spread foot & mouth disease...
We all read about the HSE attack in the last few weeks, but this was certainly not the first time a ransom attack has threatened the Irish Government.
Published on Saturday, a cool piece in The Irish Times tells the remarkable story of a letter to the state, in 1979, from a group threatening to introduce foot-and-mouth disease unless the government paid up £5 million… (somewhere around €25 million today)
Particularly funny though was that, following instructions from the extortionists, over a period of 7 months the government had to take ads out in the Irish Times in order to communicate with them.
The massive economic impact of such an outbreak amongst the livestock of a farming nation meant the threat had to be taken seriously.
Read the full piece, including about how the Gardaí tried to track down those involved, here - Irish Times
Reporter, Charlie Bird, has also published a podcast series discussing in detail how everything unfolded.

“Let sit for 2 minutes” is possibly the most ignored instruction among microwave users
