Storm Ciara
747 Travels Faster Than The Speed Of Sound
(I feel like we have had at least three emails related to planes, sure look)
Anyone in Ireland and the UK will be well aware that this weekend was extremely windy.
Storm Ciara rolled in from the Atlantic and wreaked havoc, particularly on coastlines with high waves, flooding and dangerous winds.
However, what you might not expect, is that the storm caused a Boeing 747 to travel faster than the speed of sound…
The British Airways plane, flying from New York to London, broke the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing in a subsonic plane.
Setting a time of 4hrs 56mins.
BA flight 112 was supposedly clocked at a speed of 1,327km/h 🤯
The speed of sound in air is 343 m/s - 1,235 km/h…
Crucially though, the aircraft did not break the sound barrier.
Despite travelling well over 360 m/s, the plane was not going faster than the speed of sound relative to the air around it.
The previous record, for a subsonic plane, was 5hrs 13mins.
The British Airways flight was just one minute faster than Virgin Atlantic’s flight VS4 which landed in Heathrow a minute later, and a second Virgin Flight completed the trip in just 4hrs 59mins.
All three flights comfortably beat the previous record of five hours and 13 minutes, held by Norwegian since January 2018.
“The BA112 flight, which took off from John F Kennedy airport, was scheduled to land at Heathrow at 6.25am on Sunday but arrived 102 minutes early at 4.43am.”
"We always prioritise safety over speed records, but our highly trained pilots made the most of the conditions to get customers back to London well ahead of time," a BA statement said. ”
